Stand-Up on the Side
On one of
those overcast days with few people out downtown, the kind of day I
pretty much devote to practicing the more challenging baroque sheets,
there are two young couples walking past me, one in front of the
other, just as I finish with a flourish the rousing Badinerie from
Bach's Second Orchestral Suite.
On the last note, the man in the second couple stops in his tracks,
reaches into a pocket for a dollar bill, then steps over to hand it
to me, saying, "There you go, Boss!"
"Well, I appreciate it, thank you, but I think you're mistaking
me for Bruce Springsteen."
Fortunately, that's loud enough for the fellow of the first couple
to hear, at which point he stops in his tracks, makes the same reach,
and comes back to hand me a dollar. At that, they continue on
their laughing way, which is even the more fortunate for me, as I am
at a loss for another joke.
